Human Rights Watch: Zimbabwe 2011

TheHuman Rights Watch released their World Report 2012, which summarizes theevents of 2011. Below are some of thecategories they write about and the atrocities taking place. For a complete view of 2011, read the entirereport here.

Politics

Aftera period of relative calm, 2011 saw an increase in politically motivatedviolence across the country.

Policeand prosecutors have been highly partisan and biased in their investigationsand prosecution of acts of violence between supporters of the two parties.Groups allied to ZANU-PF continue to beat and intimidate citizens in thehigh-density suburbs of Harare with impunity, while MDC activists accused ofviolence are disproportionately arrested.

HumanRights Activists & Freedom of Expression

TheZimbabwean authorities continue to use repression and intimidation to silencehuman rights advocates and to prevent them from exposing abuses and promotingrespect for human rights.

OnSeptember 21, police arrested 12 activists from the organization Women of ZimbabweArise (WOZA) during a peaceful march commemorating the international day ofpeace. Ten of the activists were released without charge but two leaders of theorganization, Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu, spent 13 days in custody.

Therecontinue to be serious limits on the rights to freedom of expression andinformation in Zimbabwe, particularly in the form of threats of closure ofindependent media organizations, as well as the intimidation, arbitrary arrest,and criminal prosecution of journalists. The government’s actions seemprimarily designed to inhibit criticism of government officials andinstitutions, and to muzzle reporting and commentary on the political situationin the country.

Diamonds

Whileviolence has decreased in the Marange diamond fields over the past year, HumanRights Watch research in June found that Zimbabwe police and private securityguards employed by mining companies in the Marange diamond fields wereimplicated in abuses against local unlicensed miners. Private security guardsworking with the police routinely beat and set dogs to attack and maul localminers who stray into areas of the fields controlled by the companies. Duringpatrols, police also fired live ammunition at miners as they fled the fields.

Interactionwith the World

The United Nations HumanRights Council’s first Universal Periodic Review of Zimbabwe took place inOctober 2011. Zimbabwe rebuffed at the outset all recommendations pertaining toinvestigating allegations of violations, combating impunity, and bolsteringprotection in the Marange region, and related to freedoms of assembly andexpression, including repealing or amending the POSA.

Due to the absence ofmeaningful human rights improvements, the European Union and United States havemaintained targeted sanctions on Mugabe and others within his government.

As elections still loom in2012, political violence is sure to rise, human rights activists andjournalists will most likely face more oppression, and Zimbabweans will bearthe brunt of the uncertainty. It’simportant to let the government in Zimbabwe know the world is watching and we want to see their incredible potential work for positive change.

Happy Women's Day!

Today is the 100th International Women's Day.

Since we work in Zimbabwe, we are particularly interested in the girls and women of Africa and how they can change the world. When you educate a girl in Africa she is less likely to get HIV/AIDS, she is more likely to have a small and healthy family, she will earn much more money and be able to pass those benefits onto her children.

A woman can end the cycle of poverty. That's why we choose to work with women artists in Zimbabwe. The women of Zimbabwe often care for many children and live on less than $1 a day. They are often unable to pay for school for their children and struggle to pay for food and medical care.

So today, please consider purchasing from Zimbags and support a woman artist in Zimbabwe who are working hard to break the cycle of poverty with their children. Celebrate the strength and courage of women by supporting some incredible artists in Zimbabwe!

Human rights are rights for humans.

Human rights are freedoms and basic rights that ALL humans are entitled to. But not all leaders (or other people) live in a way that protects these.

The people of Zimbabwe face many attacks on their rights. Here is a human rights violations that is currently taking place in Zimbabwe:

Human rights and political activists in Zimbabwe are facing a major clampdown, with over 60 currently held in detention and many allegedly tortured. In Harare, 45 people have been charged with treason and face the death penalty if convicted. More activists have been arrested in Bulawayo and Manicaland province.

As elections loom large, let's make it clear to the leaders in Zimbabwe that the world is watching and let's show the people of Zimbabwe that we care what happens to them. The March for Love.

Every year the people of WOZA march on Valentine's Day in peaceful protest. This year was the ninth year and over a thousand people showed up in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to march for peace.

From WOZA's website:

"AT 10am, five simultaneous protests began in different locations in downtown Bulawayo. One thousand eight hundred women and men, members of Women and Men of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) turned out for the ninth edition of the Valentines Day protests, the biggest protest since WOZA these protests began in 2003. The target of the peaceful protest, the offices of The Chronicle newspaper with the objective of testing if there is free media or state propaganda remains entrenched. The huge mass of singing protestors completely closed off 9th avenue for over 30 minutes.

The second group arriving at The chronicle at 10:15 am 12 Feb 2011.

The men and women aged from 17 to 93 years old, sang songs as they marched and handed out hundreds of red roses, specially prepared Valentine Cards and the Woza Moya (Come healing wind) Newsletter bearing the top ten point on constitutional reform and on the Inclusive Government. Although different songs were sung by the marching formations, one song was featured at The Chronicle offices - ‘Why are Zimbabweans populating other countries - why is that?’ The chorus answers was mentioning the instances of political violence in which people have died forcing people to flee to other countries for their better survival.

A police vehicle arrived on the scene and three plain clothed officers (in striped dresscode, so easily recognisable) went into the protest demanding cards and newsletters. They then started to make their way to the front of the protest making for leaders Williams and Mahlangu but fortunately it was at that point that the protest dispersal slogan was being shouted and people were turning away to go home. Williams and Mahlangu were swept along with the dispersing masses. All that was left was for the three officers to gather up the placards, cards and red roses left for them.

A police BMW vehicle attempted to disperse another protest just after they began by dangerously driving through the protest. Police Officers of the Riot squad came upon some dispersing members at Jason Moyo Avenue and jumped from their vehicle to try to quicken the dispersing activists. A vehicle full of Riot police was also seen at the bus terminus after the protest monitoring the movement of commuters.

The singing of songs was so well coordinated that several bystanders thought WOZA should form a choir. Another bystander commented ‘please can they say their message well so maybe things can change in Zimbabwe’. Many cars hooted and stopped to get their copies of cards and roses."

"My Rights. My Struggle." Amnesty International Exhibition

The "My Rights. My Struggle." exhibition is a testament to the extraordinary bravery and determination of ordinary Zimbabweans defending their rights. Originating in South Africa in 2008 and visiting several African countries, the exhibition compellingly illustrates the continuing need for action in Zimbabwe.

Amnesty International first brought this photo exhibition to the United States in early 2009 and is now available on line. Listen as human rights defenders describe in audio interviews the challenges they confront. Hear what keeps them motivated in the face of such adversity. Allow their voices to inspire you to speak out as well for an end to human rights abuses in Zimbabwe.

A Step in the Right Direction is a Reason to Dance.

Researchers look to Zimbabwe for ways to reduce the HIV/AIDS infection rate elsewhere. There has been as steep decline in the infection rate from 1997 to 2007 and researchers are looking for the reasons why.

The examination of why HIV prevalence in the country fell from 29 percent in 1997 to 16 percent in 2007 was carried out by epidemiologists at Imperial College, London, and Harvard University School of Public Health, Cambridge, in partnership with Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health, the UN Population Fund and UNAIDS.
Though HIV prevalence remains high by African standards, the fall in HIV prevalence in Zimbabwe is the largest seen anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa, researchers said.

"Very few other countries around the world have seen reductions in HIV infection, and of all African nations Zimbabwe was thought least likely to see such a turnaround. This is why there was such an urgent need to understand its direct and underlying causes."

In diminishing conditions on nearly every level, Zimbabwe has made huge strides in reducing the infection rate -- think of what this could mean for other countries in similar situations...what hope!!

Two things that go nearly everywhere with me: my shoes and a bag. And usually, that bag is a Zimbag and those shoes are TOMS. Today was no different. I went to the post office and grabbed some Friday morning coffees for me and Mr. Happy Bag Elf #1 and my TOMS took me there and my Zimbag carried all my stuff: keys, wallet, book, 2 coffee mugs, cell phone, and lots of other random things.

TOMS are unbelievably comfortable. And if you know me, you know that I am lazy about fashion. The more comfortable and easy it is to wear, the better. Bonus points if it happens to be cute. TOMS fit all those categories: comfortable, easy to wear, cute ... annnnnd, for every pair of TOMS you buy, they give a pair to a child in need. That is incredible. It makes me walk a little happy, bouncy walk.

I wear my pair of gray ones all the time. And they have held up like champs. The other day they took me on a bike ride to the bus, on the bus, walking around Seattle all day, and to martinis and dinner with the other (beautiful) Happy Bag Elf. And the best part: they were still comfortable at the end of the day. I love knowing that a little kid somewhere is running around in a pair of shoes just like mine just because I bought a pair. They have pairs for men, women, and the little ones... so many styles and colors to choose from, and every pair is comfortable and cute.

I have had this pair for over a year and as you can see in the photo, they are starting to fade and I have beat them up pretty badly, so I am starting to think about getting a new pair. I am leaning toward the "Love is the New Black" pair in Navy Blue.....

The Lives Behind the Numbers

The average teacher, government worker, or civil servant in Zimbabwe makes about $200 a month. Recently the state statistics agency in Zimbabwe put the poverty line for a family of five in Zimbabwe at $467.

Just to eat the bare minimum amount of calories to stay healthy, a family must spend $150. Teachers, government workers, and civil servants can’t afford to house, clothe, and feed their families, let alone pay for schooling or healthcare.

And when you look at the country as a whole, they are the lucky ones. Most Zimbabweans are unemployed and living on less than $1 a day.

Of course, these numbers are heartbreaking and shocking, but behind the numbers are the actual people living their lives and working hard.

There are 5 women artists we know in Zimbabwe that are working hard to provide for their families. They create art using the sadza technique. They cook cornmeal (sadza), create traditional Zimbabwean designs and art with the sadza on cotton fabric, wait for the sadza to dry in the sun, paint over the design, seal the paint with heat, and then remove the sadza from the fabric.

This process is time and skill intensive. The artwork produced is vibrant and beautiful, like the Zimbabwean spirit. We purchase this artwork at fair prices and sell it in our webstore where you can make the beautiful artwork your own while empowering women in Zimbabwe.

Like the woman in this beautiful sadza painting, the women artists we work with gracefully balance their burdens and carry their families as they walk toward their future.

There is no template, but there is solidarity.

After being in power for 30 years, President Robert Mugabe shows no sign of loosening his grip on Zimbabwe. The last election was violent, many were tortured, imprisoned, and killed. And the outlook for a future election is not good.

This article in the NYT lays out some of the warning signs this time around.

In Mashonaland West, Mr. Mugabe’s home province, people said they were already being warned by local traditional leaders loyal to Mr. Mugabe that the next election would be more terrifying than the last one, when their relatives were abducted and attacked after Mr. Tsvangirai won some constituencies.

“They say, ‘We were only playing with you last time,’ ” said one 53-year-old woman, too frightened to be quoted by name, repeating a warning others in the countryside have heard. “ ‘This time we will go door to door beating and killing people if you don’t vote for ZANU-PF.’ ”

Mugabe has been in power far too long and it is worsening the situation in Zimbabwe. On top of worrying about feeding their children, sending them to school, finding jobs, and every-day things... the people of Zimbabwe also fear threats of violence.

“There’s no template about the solution to the Zimbabwe crisis,” he said. “We have learned this over the last 10 years. There is no template for how we’re going to deal with Mugabe.”

There may not be a template for how to deal with Mugabe and the crisis in Zimbabwe, but there are things we can do. Even from thousands of miles away. Even physically removed from the situation, we can stand in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe. We can spread the word about what is happening. I hope that the news continues to cover the situation in Zimbabwe so that Mugabe knows the world is watching. You can spread the word by telling your friends and family, writing about it on your blog, sharing links and information on Facebook....

Solidarity: arising from common responsibilities and as between members of a group or between classes, peoples, etc.

Let's make sure that the people of Zimbabwe know that they are not alone in their fight for justice and fair treatment. Stay informed about what is going on and spread the word. Voices are powerful. The more voices, the louder the call for what is right.

Happy New Year to you! A lot of us are busy making New Year's Resolutions for the year. With a new calendar comes a fresh start to be better versions of ourselves. We want to give you a few ways Zimbags can help with your resolutions.

Today is Human Rights Day. "The Day marks the anniversary of the Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The Christian Science Monitor has a 3 page article online about the possibility of the "unified" government unraveling and early elections taking place in Zimbabwe, still without a constitution. They write that the current state of things is "reminiscent of the violent 2008 elections" and that "Even if elections are held and Mugabe loses, analysts say, it's unlikely that Mugabe will allow a new president to replace him."

“If elections are held next year, we will witness another blood bath, another disputed result, and Mugabe will remain on the helm," says Makumbe.

We try to be optimistic and hopeful, but it seems like the bandaid that has been (barely) covering this fatal wound is being ripped off.

It says something about the current state of Zimbabwe that the journalist who wrote this article had his/her identity "withheld due to security concerns."

Though we may not be able to change those in power, we can help those who are under that power. The women artists we work with live with all of this going on around them. Their work allows them the money they need to survive in such turbulence - in a country that has the highest inflation the world has ever seen, one of the lowest life expectancies, and a growing HIV infection rate. The extreme poverty, unemployment, the poor health -- all of these things are related to the current political climate of Zimbabwe.

Everybody has a bag. On my trip into downtown Seattle this last weekend I paid attention to the bags that were all around me. There was the Seattle Symphony bag, the King County Library System bag, the bag that said LOVE, the cute tote that had different kinds of mustaches all over it, the bag with yoga silhouettes, and countless others. And my bag? Well, it was a Zimbag. ((A new kind that we haven't even introduced you to yet and I was 'testing' out, but more on that later.))

3 and a half years ago, Lauren and I decided to make putting an end to extreme poverty in Zimbabwe our bag. We hired women artists in Zimbabwe to create artwork for reusable bags and started sewing the artwork to the bags. It wasn't an easy start and we have been learning as we go (see: English major & History major take on the business world), but we have watched as 7"x7" inch sadza artwork from Zimbabwe gets sewn on to bags and stamped with the Zimbags Z or the phrase "bag poverty" and given a tag with the story of a woman artist we work with. And we have watched Zimbags go out into the world. Every time we sell a bag it is a new thrill, because we know that is more money to go back to purchasing artwork from the women in Zimbabwe, but also because we know that bag can tell a story. That bag has an important history. And right now, the story is a bit grim.

When we first started Zimbags we held an art auction on a snowy night in Seattle. We called it Gallery 33 because the life expectancy for women in Zimbabwe was 33. We held the auction to raise money and awareness for the crisis in Zimbabwe and in hope that the situation would get better. Sadly, it hasn't. The life expectancy for women in Zimbabwe has fallen to 30. 30. And the UN just ranked Zimbabwe the worst place to live.

We don't want to bury you in statistics and sad stories, but 30 as a life expectancy is unacceptable. There won't be a Gallery 30 this year, but please consider supporting Zimbabwean women this holiday season. Make changing the outlook for women in Zimbabwe your bag. Tell the story of these women artists by carrying one of their bags.

We love getting mail. And not just any old mail - boxes from Zimbabwe to be exact. And more specifically, boxes from the very beautiful and talented women artists we work with in Zimbabwe. The box is always such a wonderful sight! Well....

Okay, so the box didn't exactly get here in tip-top shape. It had been wrapped in plastic and taped shut so that it required a small army of scissors and knives to unveil what was beneath the plastic wrap......

a box that had been tampered with, to put it lightly. But all of the contents made it.

Inside this box was a bounty of beautiful artwork and bags. We cannot wait to share the excitement with you as we add the new wall hangings and bags to the shop. Keep checking back for updates!

Where my bag has been taking me....

Since last Wednesday I have been taking some pictures (with my handy-dandy, fancy-pants phone) to show you where my Zimbag has taken me. The two bags I use most are the Zimbag Shopper (with an elephant) and the Black Zimbag Tote (with a zebra).

Zimbags mission is to empowering women to rise above extreme poverty. We work with women artists who are raising children, caring for parents and siblings, taking in orphans, abandoned by partners. Women who are involved in the lives of a whole web of people, who can affect real change. Often women throughout the world are denied access to schooling and find themselves married young and raising more children than they have money to feed, clothe, and send to school. It is a cycle that can be stopped. When a woman is empowered through education and employment, it empowers and enables the people in their lives to thrive.

Empowering Women & Girls

"Though worldwide, women and girls have made some significant gains, serious problems persist. Violence against women and girls, inadequate or more expensive healthcare, forced marriage, declines in maternal health, sex trafficking, and the inability to access funding for economic opportunities and education are just a few. The consequence of not focusing on empowering women and girls -- particularly in developing nations, totalitarian regimes, and war-ravaged regions, is that these nations won't realize the substantial gains and returns they would have, if they had invested in girls and women."

In Zimbabwe, 80% of the population is unemployed. Women find themselves left with children, no income, limited resources, and few options. If we don't do something to reverse the slide into poverty, a whole generation will be denied education and the cycle will start again.

Fresh Start: Candy Time!

Just a little over a month until the kids go out into the neighborhood dressed up in costumes they’ve likely been thinking about for months. The ghosts and cats and princesses and cowboys are going to need a place to put all that candy. And we have an idea – why not use a Zimbag as their candy bag?

83 members of WOZA are arrested and then released after peaceful protest

"The 83 members arrested on Monday for a peaceful protest about community safety appeared in Harare Magistrate’s Court this morning charged under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 46, as read with Section 2(v) of the Third Schedule to the Criminal Code - ‘criminal nuisance’. It transpires that police decided to go with these charges instead of obstructing traffic. They were granted free bail and remanded out of custody to 6 October."

U.N. poverty goals face accountability questions

"Before the annual jamboree of speeches coming to the United Nations General Assembly this week, about 140 leaders are expected to sign off on a new agreement recommitting themselves to reaching the original development targets and goals, known collectively as the Millennium Development Goals, by 2015. Fresh Start: Pedals & Pennies

It is a rainy Monday morning here in the Seattle area and I need apples. That means a bike ride to the grocery store. Recently, I’ve been trying to use my own power to get places. This means I’ve been walking to the store and biking to the post office and library – or trying. Sometimes it’s hard to motivate myself when using the car would be so much easier, especially now that fall (and rain) has settled in here in Washington. So I try to talk myself into it. That’s right …. I talk to myself. I tell myself about all the benefits of using my own power to travel: exercise, relieving the environment of some carbon emissions, saving money on gas, and enjoying the scenery. Plus I get to use my bike with the basket.

For the other Happy Bag Elf’s birthday I got her a tricycle. Yep, she’s a grown woman and I got her a tricycle. She can put the Little Lady in the basket in the back and bike to the park for some playing. It’s Zimbags green with a white basket. And her name is Myrtle – slow, but steady. Keep chec

In other news, I got a happy little thrill the other day I went to Target and handed the cashier my Zimbag for my few items. She said, “And for bringing your own bag, you get 5 cents off,” she scanned a little barcode taped to the counter and like magic, 5 cents came off my total.

Now, 5 cents isn’t that much. When I was in elementary school that would have bought me a tootsie roll, but that was a long time ago. But if I get 5 cents off every time I went to Target, that would probably be about $2.60 a year. (Yes, I go to Target about once a week – it’s a bad habit.) And then if I add in the discounts from the grocery stores and other stores I visit …. the bag pays for itself in about a year. And it saves a lot of plastic bags. Plus the handles on my Zimbags never break and they don’t rip and spill my stuff all over the floor. And it’s cute to boot.

But one of my favorite things about using my Zimbags at the store is that I get to tell the story of our women artists. People often comment on how much they like my bag and ask where I got it. That gives me a chance to tell them (quickly, because there is usually a line) about the women artists and Zimbags. It always makes me smile when I get to talk about Siphiwe, Ntando, Alice, Caroline, and Nomvula. It is the best motivation for using my Zimbags at the store.

Sometimes it’s the small things that make big a difference. A 2 mile bike ride to the store gives me time to enjoy the scenery and toting my Zimbags around gives me a chance to tell someone about the beautiful painting done by women half a world away.

Zimfest 2010 was a huge success for Zimbags! Not only were sales great, we were able to spread the word about our wonderful women artists and the work we are doing. On top of that, we had fun.

The weather couldn’t have been better, the set up was perfect, the crowd was enthusiastic and encouraging, the music was fabulous, and dancing in the grass didn’t hurt.

We nearly sold out of onsies, zipped right through a bunch of our Zimbags Folding Shoppers and Zimarket Minis and sold at least a few of everything each day. World Humanitarian Day

It seems like every day is in honor of something – donuts, cheese, tall people, crazy hats. Rarely do I find myself interested in these days for more than amusement at the silly things we find to focus our attention on. But today was World Humanitarian Day and I think this deserves interest and examination.

August 19^th was the day the UN decided to assign as World Humanitarian Day. This is only the 2^nd official day honoring Humanitarians. (An interesting history of the day can be found here.) Huge strides have been made in calling attention to the incredible work done by men and women who have dedicated their lives to helping others, but there is a long way to go in protecting, praising, and supporting these people and the people they choose to help.

A humanitarian is defined, by Webster, as one who promotes human welfare and social reform or having the interests of mankind at heart.

There is no special skill set outlined, no college degree required, no certification needed. All that is needed is a heart and a desire to help. With all of the hurt in this world, there is plenty of opportunity to promote human welfare.

This isn’t to say that everyone should go out and find a “cause” and devote their life to changing the wrongs (though there is certainly nothing wrong with that). I believe that any person can be a humanitarian everyday through the choices they make.

What would happen if we chose to buy gifts that support organizations working to right social injustice, poverty, medical issues, etc.? What if we chose to support (financially, physically, emotionally) those who have chosen to devote their entire life’s work to aiding those in need? What would happen? Change.

We each have the opportunity to become a humanitarian. We just need to take the interests of mankind to heart and act on those interests.

This day comes only once a year and serves as a powerful reminder of what people are doing around the world and what we can do on a daily basis to support them and the people they serve.

President Obama convened a forum this week to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of 17 African nations, but he did not invite a single African leader to help him do so.

....

When asked about President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Mr. Obama told the young people at the forum, “I’ll be honest with you — I’m heartbroken when I see what’s happened in Zimbabwe. I think Mugabe is an example of a leader who came in as a liberation fighter and — I’m just going to be very blunt — I do not see him serving his people well. And the abuses, the human rights abuses, the violence that’s been perpetrated against opposition leaders I think is terrible.”

....

“By refusing to invite them, and welcoming them in Washington, Obama is clearly telling them, ‘If you want to engage with us, you have to behave,’ ” said Mamadou Diouf, director of the Institute of African Studies at Columbia University.

Hello there. Summer is in full swing and Zimbags are making the rounds at beaches, farmer's markets, picnics, the pool, and more. Where has your bag taken you? (We'd love to hear from you or see pictures!)

It's been an exciting summer as we made our first appearance at the Crossroads Farmer's Market in Bellevue, Washington and we are gearing up for Zimfest 2010 in Corvallis, Oregon from August 20-22.

Zimfest 2010 is bound to be a blast with Zimbabwean music and dancing and a marketplace full of other non-profits, musicians, artists, and more. We'd love to see you if you are in the area. Stop by and see what Zimbags is up to and dance with us.

We will be debuting two new screen print designs at Zimfest 2010 and the following week at the Crossroads Farmer's Market. They will be up online next month, but stop by one of these events to get them before everyone else. We also have toddler and kid shirts now that will be available at these events. All the designs are based on paintings done by the women artists and all of the proceeds go directly back to them.

We are excited about the things happening at Zimbags right now. Keep checking back for more updates and pictures. (And, of course, we'd love to hear from you and see you with your bag or shirt!)

Zimbags at the market....

June 1st marked Zimbags' first trip to the Farmer's Market. We had so much fun, in spite of the chilly weather. We were able to tell the Zimbags story, get some stylish bags into the hands of market-goers, and eat some yummy food.

June 15th was our 2nd trip and was even better because the sun decided to make an appearance!

Our hope is that the Farmer's Market will be a great place to spread the word about Zimbags, get reusable bags into the hands of shoppers to reduce the use of plastic bags, and show off the beautiful work of our women artists.

Our next date is June 29th .... we really hope to see you there! And if you can't come to the Crossroads Farmer's Market in Bellevue, Washington -- you could buy a Zimbag Shopper and a Zimarket Mini to make trips to your local farmer's market easier and more environmentally friendly.

A Zimbags Picnic...

Spring is here in Washington!

This past weekend Ryan and I (Meghan, one of the Happy Bag Elves) had a sunny Sunday afternoon picnic beneath a weeping willow and a jaunt at the dog park for two very happy puppies.

Our Zimbag was packed to the brim with enough food for the 2 of us, 2 water bottles, 2 sodas, dog food and water bowls, treats for the pups, and a quilt for sitting on. We used The Zimbags Shopper which was the perfect size for our day out. And it was sturdy enough to hold up to me dropping it and a spilled water bottle!

It was lovely to pack up and eat outdoors. (The pups are still recovering from their long day at the dog park and currently sleeping at my feet.)

What Your Zimbag Can Do For You

To many of us it seems that the plastic bags they hand you at the store upon checkout are free, but the truth is they cost us about $4 billion dollars a year (according to the Wall Street Journal). If everybody started bringing their own bags and stores stopped producing and using plastic bags, our grocery bills could be lower, our landfills smaller, and our petroleum use lower (because plastic bags are made from petroleum). In the 25 years since plastic bags into our markets, we in the US have used 100 billion bags annually.

I don't think I have to go on, I'm sure you've heard all of this before and have seen the plastic bags acting as tumbleweeds outside and hanging from your pantry door and amassing in ditches and city streets. And you know what you can do! You can bring your own bags when you shop. And when you purchase a Zimbag, you get the added bonuses of beautiful artwork and the knowledge that your purchase is providing income to a woman in Zimbabwe struggling to survive on less than $1 a day.

And bringing your own bag isn't something that just helps the environment or other people. Whew! After a tumultuous trip from Zimbabwe to South Africa where it spent a nice vacation, a new shipment of patches has arrived in Washington State! It is always like Christmas morning when we get a new shipment. To know that the last person touching these patches was a sister in Zimbabwe is incredibly moving. (And who doesn't love receiving a box tied up with string?)

The box was stuffed full of vibrant patches. From the hands of women artists in Zimbabwe to our hands in the US. It's a beautiful thing...

Ever wonder how the patches look when they arrive? Here are a few pictures of the raw patches. Stunning and a little rough around the edges. Perhaps like a metaphor for Zimbabwe? The art is complete, the edges are a bit frayed. There are such bold oranges, reds, and yellows. The rich purples and browns are equally beautiful.

After we stare at these patches and hold them in our hands, flipping through the newness of the art ... we get to work! A little tending to those rough edges. We hem the beauties with black thread...

After the hemming? The patches are sewn onto recycled, reusable bags that are ready for you!

Show the Love: Stand in Solidarity this Valentine’s Day

2009 brought the spotlight on Zimbabwe for a number of heartbreaking and disturbing reasons, but one bright, hopeful spotlight was shone on the country in November. On November 23^rd, 2009 President Obama presented a Zimbabwean human rights organization with the year’s Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award. WOZA – Women of Zimbabwe Arise – was given the prestigious award for their work with women in Zimbabwe.

For 41 years, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights has worked for a more peaceful and just world. The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award was first established in 1984. With matters in Zimbabwe worsening, it was the perfect time to focus on the positive things happening in such a beautiful country.

Jenni Williams, who accepted the award on behalf of WOZA said, “We are not fighting a revolution in Zimbabwe, we are leading an evolution. And civic education is our tool to evolve the hearts and minds of Zimbabweans to build a strong, new, African democracy where respect, tolerance and accountability are key.”

Women all over Zimbabwe have been standing up for themselves, their children, and other women, but WOZA and the attention this award has brought to their bold struggle will hopefully cause men and women around the world to stand with them and strengthen their voices.

Kerry Kennedy spoke at the event and said, “As of today, the RFK Center and all of us in this room are watching and galvanizing support for the women of WOZA. We will investigate, advocate, and educate on the issues WOZA confronts. We will stand with the women of WOZA as they speak truth to power.”

We can only hope that what Kerry Kennedy said is true and heart-felt and that others feel compelled to stand with her. At Zimbags we stand in solidarity with these women all year, but on this holiday of love when we are fortunate enough to give and get luxurious treats, we feel their struggles strongly.

About Sadza

Sadza (pronounced Sud-za) is corn ground into a fine meal, often cooked and served with vegetables or meat sauce. A staple in Zimbabwe, it can also be used to create a beautiful painting. The painting technique involves using sadza on the fabric to separate colors when applying paint. After the paint is applied, the canvas is left to dry. Once dry, the fabric is washed of the sadza, leaving behind beautiful Zimbabwean designs.

Sneak Peak

As we get closer to our store re-launch we wanted to give you a preview of what is to come.

We have added new products, the women have created new designs (along with some old ones), and we have revamped our website.

The Happy Bag Elves have been hard at work sewing patches, brewing coffee, brainstorming, and assembling bags. 25,000 gallons of coffee and numerous serious discussions with sewing machines later, the patches are sewn and the bags are being put together.

Why are these Bag Elves so happy? Well, it does something good for the spirit to sew fabric painted by loving hands thousands of miles away. Touching the same fabric that women artists in Zimbabwe designed, painted, cut, and shipped brings a smile to our faces. There is something inspiring about the vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges the women paint with - it's like a spot of hope in a bleak horizon.

Today the US government released new figures on the life expectancy of Americans. It is currently 78. That is the highest in United States history. Women tend to live 5 years longer than men and most die of natural or age related issues.

Now compare that to the citizens of a country 9,000 miles away Men in Zimbabwe can expect to live to 37 years old, while women are struggling to make it to 33. At 33 many Americans are just beginning families, finishing medical school, changing careers for a 2nd time, traveling the world. As the food disappears from shelves, female sanitary products become rare, inflation continues to set awful records, and jobs are non-existent the age women hope to reach keeps slipping. Most deaths are caused by preventable diseases which are exacerbated by malnutrition and starvation.

Gallery 33: Zimbags Art Auction

If you are an artist, and even if you aren't, keep reading.

On December 1st, 2007 - World AIDS Day - Zimbags will be hosting an art auction in Seattle to benefit women in Zimbabwe. These women face a world record-breakingly low life expectancy of just 33 years, due to an HIV/AIDS infection rate of 29% and malnutrition as most live on less than $10 per month.

Our goal is to have 33 pieces of art to auction off on Dec. 1st. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate a piece of art, please send an e-mail to joinus@zimbags.org.

Even if you aren't an artist, you can help. The Numbers

11,000,000: There are over 11 million children in Sub Saharan Africa who have been orphaned by AIDS.

4,000,000: The UN predicts the number of people needing urgent food assistance will increase to 4 million in the first three months of 2008.

5000%: Zimbabwe’s current inflation rate, a world record.

90%: Percentage of Zimbabwe’s population is living on less than $1 a day – this often means they are living on pennies.

70%: Percentage of deaths in children under 5 in Zimbabwe that are caused by HIV/AIDS.

35: The life expectancy for women in Zimbabwe. 35 and falling.

20%: In Zimbabwe, more than 20% of young women are infected with HIV/AIDS. Poverty perpetuates this disease as women turn to the sex industry for money, contraceptives become scare, medicines are too expensive, mothers do not get prenatal care, education is rare, and sexual violence rates increase. HIV/AIDS is then passed onto their children.

1%: At this moment, only a fraction of 1% of the population can afford one meal a day.

But the statistics only get us so far.

Millions of people in Zimbabwe need your help: finding a solution to their hunger, healing their ailments, earning a living wage, and mending their families, community, and country.

These women, and other women worldwide, deserve to live past their 35th birthday.

It is the right of every person to earn a living wage. It is the right of every person to have access to healthcare. It is the right of every person to live.

Seattle Takes First Step: Will you join them?

The Seattle Times reports on a new intitative by the Seattle City Council to cut back on the use of plastic bags. The focus has turned to re-usable bags:

In a city where people routinely bring their own cups to coffee shops, grocery stores already sell canvas bags, and mulch is a household word, further cutting back on trash seems like the next logical step, advocates of the proposals said.

If you do not live in Seattle changes are coming to your area soon, "...the tide is changing. Portland, San Francisco and Oakland, Calif., have banned plastic-foam food containers or plastic grocery bags, and cities in New York and Connecticut are considering similar measures."

Imagine your favorite place: the beach, the mountains, a local park, or your own backyard. Now picture the animals there dying as they are entangled in plastic bags, mistake plastic bags for food, or eat and drink from contaminated sources. Imagine plastic bags clinging to tree branches and tumbling across lawns. It shouldn’t be hard to envision these awful scenes; this is the reality of our environment.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. uses 100 billion plastic shopping bags every year, if you add to that the plastic wrapping and packaging, Americans are the largest consumer of plastic in the world. Every minute one million bags are consumed worldwide. Billions of these bags end up as litter each year and only 1% of plastic bags are ever recycled.

Plastic bags don’t bio-degrade, they photo-degrade (break down into smaller toxic fragments) which causes toxins to enter animals’ nutritional sources, as well as contaminating water and soil that humans use everyday. Plastic bags are made from polyethylene, which is a petroleum product, and this makes the toxins even more dangerous. The fact that these bags are a made from petroleum means that the production of these bags are wasting oil and energy that could be used more wisely.

Countries around the world are implementing innovative new laws and taxes to reduce the use and impact of plastic bags. In 2002, Ireland introduced a plastic bag consumption tax, PlasTax, which has reduced consumption by 90%. Because plastic bags are made from polyethylene, this move by Ireland has saved approximately 18,000,000 liters of oil. In Australia, about 90% of retailers have signed up with the government's voluntary program to reduce plastic bag use. Other countries who have banned the bags or taken steps to reducing their use include: Bangladesh, Italy, South Africa, Mumbai (formerly Bombay), and India.
Companies who are making an effort to reduce the use of plastic bags here in the United States include: Ikea (they now charge customers who use plastic bags) and Whole Foods (the company will take off 5 cents for each reusable bag a customer brings in).
With so many options for reusable bags why not stop using plastic bags? You could save animals, oil, and our environment. Let’s leave our earth green for the next generation!
